10 Years Imprisonment for Culpable Homicide

On 18 March 2015 the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court convicted and sentenced Mzwandile Phoswa (16) to ten years imprisonment for Culpable Homicide. This follows an accident that occurred on 8 March 2014 at about 11:30 where 38-year-old Sbongiseni Zondi was struck by a vehicle that was driven by the accused. The victim had sustained multiple fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene. The accused made several court appearances until he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence. “Too many people die on our roads and we hope that this sentence serves as a deterrent to those that don’t obey the rules of our roads,” she said.
