Algeria: Abdelmadjid Tebboune re-elected as president with 94.65% of the vote

The incumbent president of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was overwhelmingly re-elected on September 8, 2024, with 94.65% of the vote.

Helped by the windfall of natural gas, of which Algeria is Africa’s leading exporter, Mr Tebboune has promised to increase pensions and salaries, create 450,000 jobs and housing, and make Algeria ‘the second largest economy in Africa’.

This second term is expected to be crucial for the country’s political and economic stability.
