Another Gauteng detective secures a sentence for a convicted murderer following a 2018 taxi violence related incident

PARKTOWN – The Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Major General Girly Mbele lauded detectives in the province for leading quality investigations.

On Tuesday, 29 March 2022 the Gauteng South High Court sentenced 29-year-old Lindokuhle Hlalakwazi Sibisi to two life terms and an additional 25 years’ imprisonment for murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Sibisi fired multiple gunshots at people on Monday, 12 November 2018 at Johannesburg taxi rank before he fled the scene. This resulted in the death of two people at the scene and three people being critically injured and transported to hospital for treatment, of which one later died. Sibisi was acquitted on the murder charge of the person who died in hospital.

Sergeant Chuene Daniel Mabala attached to Gauteng Provincial Head Office (PHO), Taxi Violence Unit was assigned to investigate the case.

Mabala immediately followed up on the available leads which led him to a Kempton Park taxi rank office whereby Sibisi was arrested. The search also resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Through the application of a ballistic test it was confirmed that the recovered firearm is positively linked to the Johannesburg taxi rank shooting.

“The meticulousness and dedication by Sergeant Mabala ensured a solid case against the accused in court. It is evident that police in Gauteng remain dedicated in addressing the scourge of serious and violent crimes in the province,” said Major General Mbele.

This success follows a day after the Gauteng South High Court sentenced 49-year-old Roy Mlungisi Ndawonde to 80 years’ imprisonment for the murder of 34-year-old Nomsa Makhanya in Tembisa; she was a member of Kempton Park Taxi Association at the time of her death in 2019.
