Addis Ababa—China is partnering with Ethiopia to overhaul the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system in the country. This collaboration aims to share best practices, improve policies, and build capacities in TVET institutions.
According to a new release by the Ethiopian News Agency, the Director-General of the China-Africa Vocational Education Alliance, stated that the alliance has been working closely with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Labor and Skills. The partnership includes reviewing TVET policies, guidelines, curriculum, teaching-training materials, and conducting capacity-building activities for TVET managers and faculties.
Mark noted that China has a wealth of experience in TVET, which has significantly contributed to the country’s economic development. He highlighted that China houses 1,500 TVET institutions and that representatives from 12 of these will come to Ethiopia for consultations with officials and experts. These discussions are aimed at understanding the local needs and realities to inform program design and implementation.
The assessment phase in Ethiopia has already begun, with the review of current documents and occupational statuses scheduled for completion in November. The collaboration will span multiple sectors, including industry development, infrastructure, agriculture, mines, construction, and tourism.
Additionally, Mark emphasized that TVET development and industry linkages are crucial areas that the program will focus on. This will involve cultivating technicians for different industries. He mentioned a joint training program between a Chinese and an Ethiopian institution where trainees would receive certification from both sides. Post-graduation, these trainees will be placed in various industries for internships, including many Chinese companies operating in Ethiopia.
According to Mark, this collaborative approach will lead to the production of more qualified technicians for various industries, fulfilling the needs of both Ethiopian and Chinese businesses.
