Community members cautioned on the spread of fake news

FREE STATE – The management of the South African Police Service in Free State Province have noted with concern the spread of unfounded messages on different social media platforms on crime alleged to have happened.

Voice notes and posts are being circulated about shooting incidences such as an alleged shooting incident in Small Street in Willows, an alleged drive-by shooting in Dr Belcher Road and alleged gang-rape in Monnahalatwe in Phase 6, Bloemfontein.

The alleged incidences circulated through voice notes and posts were never reported at any police station where they are said to have occurred. Members of the public are cautioned to refrain from posting and sharing fake news as the spread of such news causes unnecessary panic in the community.

“These incidences are placing a serious strain on our resources, which would eventually negatively affect our response where a genuine case is reported,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane.
