Detective secures a 21 year sentence for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition

GAUTENG – On Tuesday, 19 April 2022 the Johannesburg Magistrates’ court sentenced 48-year-old Philani John Mbuyisa to 21 years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Mbuyisa was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Members of SAPS Johannesburg Central were out conducting a routine crime prevention patrol on 20 August 2018 when they detected a suspicious looking vehicle with three occupants in Johannesburg CBD. A search led the members to recover an unlicensed firearm with ammunition from one of the passengers. Mbuyisa failed to produce a firearm license and was subsequently arrested; he remained in custody.

The good conviction is a result of quality investigation by Sergeant Tebogo Thage, a detective at SAPS Johannesburg Central Detective Service.
