Electoral Commission on candidates contesting municipal by-elections

Three (3) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo Provinces on Wednesday, 25 January 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by three (3) independent candidates and 14 candidates from Six (6) political parties.

In the Eastern Cape

• Ward 05 Mbhashe Municipality – EC121, will be contested by Mzekelo Robert Ndikinda of the African National Congress (ANC), Sikelela Mdikinda of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Elmon Ncetezo of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 45,38%.

In Limpopo

• Ward 17 Blouberg Municipality – LIM351, will be contested by three independent candidates who are: Mavlis Rakgoropo, Mokgesi Solomon Davhana and Phineas Dikonketso Makgwathana and Sebolaishi Anikie Maputla is from the ANC and Maputla Justice Maputla of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 50,03%.

• Ward 10 Polokwane Municipality – LIM354, will be contested by Mayinga John Hlongwane of the ActionSA, Tebogo Emelda Makwea of the Active African Christians United Movement, Maphuti Bushy Malebana of the African Christian United Movement, Maropeng Nicca Ramoshaba of the ANC, Jacob Segodi Seshoka from the EFF and Jackson Khoza of the Party of Action.

The ward was previously represented by the EFF and became vacant as a result of The councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal Elections was 45,21%.
