Addis Ababa — Ethiopia's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen has emphasized the importance of the Ethiopian Tamrit (Let Ethiopia Produce) movement as a cornerstone for the nation's economic development.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, a Steering Committee convened today to evaluate the progress and impediments encountered by the initiative, which aims to establish a resilient manufacturing industry by addressing sectoral challenges effectively and holistically.

Demeke Mekonnen, who also serves as the Chairman of the Steering Committee, highlighted the movement's success in overcoming industry-specific issues through collaborative efforts, resulting in notable achievements. He called on all stakeholders to maintain and elevate this cooperative spirit to foster economic expansion.

The Deputy Prime Minister underscored the need for leadership at all echelons to demonstrate commitment and resolve, particularly in combating corruption within the sector.

Furthermore, Demeke stated that ongoing attention to policy and practice reforms is crucial and must not be deferred. He advocated for a continued focus on enhancing the value of products, overhauling procurement systems, and ensuring the quality of goods for both domestic and international markets.

Members of the steering committee echoed this sentiment, stressing the significance of these aspects in strengthening Ethiopia's manufacturing capabilities.

Industry Minister Melaku Alebel reported on the movement's pivotal role in reducing dependency on imports by detailing that the country has replaced imported goods worth 350 million USD in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. He also informed that approximately 360 industries, which had ceased operations previously, have been revitalized with the requisite support.

The minister concluded by urging leaders to recognize the critical function of sustainable development and investment expansion, calling for sustained support to these ends.
