Grootbrak woman (42) receives 10 year jail term for Stilpane tablets

Western Cape – A 42-year-old woman from Grootbrak River will spend ten years behind bars after she was convicted for contravening the Medicine Control Act , Act 101 of 1965 Sec 22A in the Knysna Magistrates’ Court, yesterday, Wednesday, 05 August 2020.
This conviction stems from an incident dated back to June 2016 when the vehicle she was travelling in was pulled over during a Tri-lateral Cross-Border operation on the N-2 near Knysna. With the search that ensued, members deployed at the roadblock found twelve thousand (12 000) Stilpane tablets that were concealed inside the car. At the time they could not provide evidence or legitimate reason for them being in possession of the scheduled medicine.
Subsequent to the find, the three occupants of the car, two men and the accused, were arrested. The case was withdrawn against the two men at a later stage and the sole accused, Heidi Moolman, was charged with contraventions in terms of the Medicine Control Act.
Yesterday the Knysna Magistrates’ Court imposed a 10-year direct imprisonment sentence on Heidi Moolman.
Western Cape Provincial Management has lauded the efforts by the Tri-Lateral group and the subsequent investigation done by the Provincial Detectives Organised Crime Unit’s Narcotics Section based in George which led up to the positive conviction. Further to this is the sterling cooperation demonstrated by the NPA prosecutor in the matter and the investigation team. Such a harsh sentence should deter drug pedlars and simultaneously enhance trust in our judicial system.
