Jail term for rapist thug

DURBAN: A KWAZULU-Natal rapist will live up to his name for the next 30 years for violating and robbing her victim. Vusi Jele (37), whose surname translates to “jail”, has been sentenced at the Empangeni Regional Court. He was sentenced to 20 years for rape and ten years for robbery.

This follows a case where a 27-year-old victim was attacked at her place of residence in December 2011, in Mandlanzini area at Empangeni. The accused entered the victim’s bedroom and threatened her with a screwdriver, demanded her cellphones and raped her.

A case of rape and robbery was reported at Richards Bay police station where a docket was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. The victim was counselled at a local centre and on her way to the facility one day, she was able to notice the accused on the side of the road.

The accused was immediately arrested and made several court appearances until his sentencing. Police welcomed the sentence. “The sentence handed down to the accused will send a strong and clear message to other rapists that the police will arrest and prosecute them without any delay,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
