NORTHERN CAPE – The Springbok and Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species units (STESU) successfully conducted a joint buy and bust operation and arrested 9 suspects for illegal possession of protected plants.

The operation took place on Thursday, 06 January 2022 in Elsiesrivier in the Western Cape. Police confiscated 3500 Conophytum Achabense plants worth approximately R200 000-00 and Conophytum Fredericea plants with an estimated street value of R150 000-00.

Police also confiscated a VW Polo, a Opel Kaddet and 5 cellphones that were allegedly utilized in the commission of these crimes.

All nine suspects are from Springbok in the Northern Cape and were charged with dealing/collecting/transporting and illegal possession of protected plants.

The suspects should be appearing in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court soon. The investigation continues.
