KwaZulu-Natal Political Parties Pledge Peace Ahead of Elections

General

Durban — In a significant move to uphold democracy, political parties in KwaZulu-Natal have committed to ensuring that the upcoming general elections on May 29, 2024, will be conducted peacefully and lawfully.

According to South African Government News Agency, this pledge, signed at a ceremony hosted by the Electoral Commission at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, marks a pivotal step towards sustaining the peace and stability that has been hard-won in the region. The commitment comes as the province commemorates the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s democratic transition.

During the event, Premier Dube-Ncube reflected on the historical challenges of political violence that once marred the province, which led to the loss of approximately 20,000 lives from the late 1980s through the post-1994 democratic era. She highlighted the collective efforts of political leaders, community figures, religious groups, and NGOs in achieving lasting peace, which has subsequently fostered improved service delivery and attracted investment.

The Premier emphasized that the agreement by the parties is not merely a ceremonial gesture but a profound assurance to the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal that the specter of past conflicts will not be revisited. She argued that peace and development are intertwined, with stability being crucial for ongoing progress and prosperity in the province.

Dube-Ncube called on all stakeholders to continue promoting peace, stability, and tolerance, not just during the electoral period but beyond, to maintain KwaZulu-Natal’s positive development trajectory.
