Life sentence meted against rapist, another in custody

The police in Mpumalanga together with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority, continue to make life difficult for rapists. This comes in the wake of a hefty sentence meted against a 52-year-old man, who raped his 17-year-old girl last year.

The court heard that in July last year, the convict raped his daughter on the day after having collected her from the bus stop. Along the road however, he diverted to a secluded spot where he raped her twice. The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was brought to book in a few days. The Standerton Regional Court after being satisfied with the concrete evidence knitted by both the investigating team as well as the prosecution, sentenced the accused to life.

The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, also welcomes the sentencing of the accused who will not be named to protect the victim. General Zuma also indicated that sexual offences are a thorn in the flesh and they also rob victims of their dignity. He further said that those responsible should be removed from society and be subjected to lengthy sentences. What makes this case so peculiar and disgusting, is the fact that the convict ruthlessly raped his own child whom he was supposed to protect. This is evident that some people do not have morals, said General Zuma.

As much as fighting crime against women and children is a priority to the South African Police Service, it is also the responsibility of the community to join the police in their quest to create an environment that is safe and secure for these vulnerable groups, said the Provincial Commissioner.

This plea of the General spiralled from a recent incident, where a 12-year-old girl was raped by a 33 year old man at Mgcobaneni near Hazyview. The whistle was blown by two children who noticed the suspect dragging the victim, who was crying for help, to a dump. The children then ran to a nearby security guard who was on duty at a local supermarket who then went to investigate. Upon arrival at the scene, the guard found the suspect, half naked and busy molesting the minor. Police were summoned to the scene and the suspect was arrested.

The suspect appeared at the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 14 May 2018, where he was ordered to remain in custody until 23 May 2017, for a formal bail application.
