Life serving prisoner received another 25 years for cash in transit heist

MPUMALANGA – The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Zodwa Mokoena hailed with great joyfulness, the additional 25 years imprisonment imposed to the life serving rigid criminal, David Thabo Dube (49) who was found guilty and sentenced by the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday, 10 August 2022 for cash-in-transit robbery and two counts of attempted murder.

The sentence followed an incident which took place in the morning of 17 April 2000 at about 11:45 where the accused attacked a COIN Armed Van (AV) between Graskop and Bushbuckridge. Reportedly, a group of heavily armed criminals accosted the AV, thundered it and managed to escape with close to R1 million.

In 2022, the case was handed over to the Nelspruit based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further probe. During the investigation, the accused was linked through fingerprints to the crime scene. During profiling of the accused, it was established that he was serving 25 years imprisonment for another cash-in-transit heist which took place in October 2017 at Klerksdorp. The accused was requisitioned from prison on 30 June 2022 and he appeared before the Graskop Magistrates’ Court.

Major General Mokoena further applauded the determination and dedication of the investigating team as well as the prosecution for their successfully prosecuting the accused. She concluded by saying that, “As the Hawks, we shall leave no stone unturned. We shall continue with the good relationship with the community to curve and uproot the thorns from the community.”
