Addis Ababa: Renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson has issued a call to Ethiopians living abroad, urging them to contribute their expertise to Ethiopia’s national development. This appeal came during his visit to the newly inaugurated Chebera Churchura Elephant Paw Lodge in the Dawuro Zone of South West Ethiopia.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, who participated in the lodge’s opening ceremony alongside Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other dignitaries, the visit reignited his passion for Ethiopia. He expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s rich flavors, landscapes, and traditions, which have deeply influenced his culinary journey.
During his stay at the Elephant Paw Lodge, Samuelsson was struck by the beauty and potential of the region, a place he had not explored before despite his extensive travels in Ethiopia. He shared his enthusiasm for the country’s diverse natural resources and wildlife, and praised the lodge’s remarkable setting.
Samuelsson highlighted Ethiopia’s potential as a prime tourism destination, noting its incredible natural resources and varied landscapes. He emphasized the country’s diversity in terms of food, culture, and landscape, particularly outside the cities, suggesting that Ethiopia could become a seasonal tourism haven.
Beyond promoting tourism, Samuelsson recognized the efforts of the Ethiopian Diaspora in showcasing their culture globally through restaurants and artistic endeavors. He believes that it’s time for them to return to Ethiopia and contribute more directly. He mentioned “Marcus Addis” as an example, a platform for knowledge exchange between himself and aspiring Ethiopian chefs.
Samuelsson stressed that Ethiopians abroad, regardless of their profession, hold skills and knowledge crucial for the progress of their homeland. He urged them to share their expertise in fields like technology and finance to aid in the nation’s growth.
His call to action extends beyond professional contributions; it is an invitation to reconnect with one’s roots and celebrate Ethiopian culture in various forms. Samuelsson’s message underscores the importance of personal and professional engagement in Ethiopia’s development.
