Mid Illovo police unscathed after shoot-out with criminals

DURBAN – On 9 April 2019 at 01:00 police officers from Mid Illovo were on patrol at the Marianhill Road in Eston, when they spotted a white bakkie with three occupants that failed to stop at an intersection. The police officers attempted to intercept the vehicle but it sped off and the chase ensued.

The suspects alighted from their vehicle opened fire at the police officers and the shoot-out ensued. The suspects fled into a sugarcane plantation. The K9 Unit responded and a 30-year-old suspect was apprehended with the help of the canine. The suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention where he is under police guard. The remaining suspects who manage to flee the scene are still being sought by police.

Further investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen in the Scottburgh on 2 April 2018. Charges of attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property were opened for investigation at Mid Illovo SAPS. The arrested suspect was absent at the first court appearance yesterday in the Richmond Magistrates Court. The matter was remanded to 18 April 2019.
