Minister concerned over Sundowns’ reports in Egypt

Pretoria – Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has expressed concern at reports of Mamelodi Sundowns’ inability to train after its hosts in Egypt failed to give the team a venue ahead of this weekend’s African Championship League second leg final.

“I have noted with grave concern reports coming from Egypt that Sundowns could not train. We are irked by such behaviour and condemn it in the strongest terms This culture is foreign in football and should be done away with,” said the Minister on Friday.

He said the move cast a shadow over the spirit of the CAF championships.

Sundowns beat the Egyptian powerhouse, Zamalek, over the past weekend 3-0 in the first leg of the final. The team will play Zamalek in Alexandria on Sunday.

Commending the team for their performance in Atteridgeville, Minister Mbalula said their win was a win not just for the football club, but for South Africa.

“Mamelodi Sundowns’ win was not just for the football club but for South Africa. They flew our flag high and represented us with distinction.”

Minister Fikile Mbalula called on South Africans to unite and support Sundowns to the finishing line.
