News: Firearms seized and suspects apprehended for serious crimes in Nyanga Cluster

CAPE TOWN – Determination and strides to deal with the proliferation of firearms in the Nyanga Cluster continue to bring results.

Police, who were strategically deployed together with members of the army, focusing on gang infested areas came across a suspect who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition in Cinderpark Court in Leonsdale. The firearm’s serial number has been filed off. The 17-year-old suspect, believed to be a member of a gang, was arrested and detained for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

He is due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged for the possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of ammunition.

In an unrelated incident, a 23-year-old suspect was arrested for a house robbery case he allegedly committed on Wednesday, 19 February 202 in Ntabethemba Street in Island, Philippi East. The suspect entered the house and pointed a firearm at the family who was watching television at the time and demanded money and cellular telephones. The suspect took cash, a cellphone and other items and fled the scene. He was traced by the detectives and arrested on Thursday, 20 February 2020.

The suspect is also linked to another house robbery and rape case which occurred last month where he and an accomplice robbed a couple of their cellphones and money during which they raped the wife.

He is due to appear in Athlone Magistrate’s Court on rape and house robbery charges.
