UN affirms solidarity following deadly attack on AU troops in Somalia

A deadly attack on African Union peacekeepers in Somalia has been strongly condemned by the UN representative in the country.

At least 19 Ugandan peacekeepers serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) were killed on Tuesday when Al-Shabaab militants attacked their base in the south of the country.

UN envoy Nicholas Kay has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He also affirmed UN solidarity with the African Union mission and the Somali security forces as they work to defeat the militants and build peace and stability.

Destruction of Syria temple “a crime against civilization”

The destruction of one of the important religious monuments in the Middle East has been labelled “a crime against civilization” and a “war crime” by the head of the UN cultural organization, UNESCO.

In a statement on Tuesday, UNESCO chief Irina Bokova expressed “profound dismay” that Islamic militants had blown up the Temple of Bel in the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria.

Ms Bokova stated that while the incident “constitutes an intolerable crime against civilization…4,500 years of history will never be erased.”

UN Human Rights chief in Central African Republic

The UN Human Rights High Commissioner has begun a four-day official visit to the Central African Republic.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein arrived in the capital, Bangui, on Tuesday.

“I’m here to meet with all the stakeholders in the country: The officials of the country, the respective members of civil society, at a time when of course the situation in the country merits a very careful consideration, and I hope through the engagement with all the partners, including the countries that have supported the Central African Republic, as it transitions now hopefully to a successful election period I think it’s crucial so I’m here to establish contact in that regard.”

The High Commissioner will also deliver an address to the International Seminar on Combatting Impunity organized by his office and the UN mission in the country, MINUSCA.
