No quarter-finals stage at newspaper cup

The Namibian Football Association (NFA) announced on Sunday that there will be no quarter-finals played at The Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament underway at Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondupa Region.

Member of the NFA local organising committee, Tim Isaacs in an interview with Nampa said all the 14 regional teams participating in the 21st edition of the Newspaper Cup are aware of the ‘no quarter-finals’ development.

“We will get straight into the semi-finals of the tournament with only four teams that accumulate top points in football,” he said.

Isaacs said the other 10 regional football teams will then be dropped off from the tournament.

The four teams that will proceed, are all coming from the four groups of the tournament.

The 2023 Newspaper Cup officially kicked off here at Otjiwarongo’s Paresis Sports Complex on Friday morning, and it will come to an end on Monday with the crowning of the new champions in both football and netball categories.

Zambezi Region is the defending champion in football, while in netball it is the Khomas Region.
