North West Legislature condemns bullying at schools

North West Education Committee condemns bullying at schools and has asked Department to investigate allegations of suicide by a learner at Living Faith Christian School in Mahikeng
The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Education, Sports, Arts and Culture chaired by Hon. Kabelo Mataboge has expressed shock at the alleged suicide by a learner at Living Faith Christian School in Mahikeng. According to media reports, the learner committed suicide after being summoned to a corporal punishment by teacher in front of other teachers at the school’ staff room due to misbehaviour.

“We are shocked that such a young life has been lost due to alleged bullying and corporal punishment by the same teachers who were supposed to protect the learner. We wish to send our deepest condolences to the family of the late learner. The Committee will keep the family in prayers in these difficult times,” said Hon. Mataboge.
He said the Committee urges the Department of Education to institute an immediate investigation on the incident and report within 7 working days. “The department should not leave any stone unturned as this is a serious matter and those who led to the learner committing suicide must be brought to book,” said Hon. Mataboge.
