Operation Sikhona paints Buffalo Metro City blue, taverns warned to comply

EAST LONDON – Weekend Operations continue in the Buffalo City Municipality District with successes including the closing down of two shebeens and seizure of liquor valued over R45 000.00 last night.

The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso together with her Provincial and District Management led their foot soldiers during evening operations with stakeholders such as the local traffic department and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board adding as force multipliers.

The following successes were recorded:

• Two shebeens were closed down for operating as unlicensed liquor outlets, and the owners were fined. Police confiscated 217 204 litres of liquor valued at about R45 000.

• Three taverns were served with compliance notices for various contravention of the Liquor Act such as failure to appoint a manager.

• Thirteen (13) people were arrested for crimes ranging from possession of illicit drugs to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

• About 255 vehicles were searched during the operation.

Major General Kupiso commended the foot soldiers. “The law-abiding citizens are noticing your selfless efforts. Let us maintain this momentum, and ensure that we continue working towards safer districts for a safer Eastern Cape”, added Maj Gen Kupiso.
