NORTHERN CAPE — In a significant clampdown on illegal mining activities, Operation Vala Umgodi, a multi-disciplinary law enforcement initiative, has detained 45 suspects across the Northern Cape. The operation, involving teams from various security and regulatory agencies, began on Monday, July 29, 2024, targeting undocumented immigrants and violations of mining, firearm, and immigration statutes.

According to South African Police Service, the operation saw substantial action in the Namakwa District, where 30 undocumented immigrants were detained during checks at the Sizamile formal settlement and various vehicle checkpoints around Port Nolloth/Kleinsee and Kommagas/Hondeklipbaai intersections, as well as the Tweepad mining area. Additionally, one individual was arrested for obstructing justice, and several traffic fines were issued.

In the Frances Baard District, law enforcement officers arrested 12 individuals for illegal mining and immigration violations. Two more suspects were apprehended near the Klipdam mine on charges related to the Firearms and Ammunitions Act and are scheduled for a court appearance in the Windsorton Magistrate Court.

All detained suspects are currently being processed and verified by Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services before formal charges are levied or deportation procedures are initiated. Authorities also confiscated numerous mining tools believed to be used in illegal mining operations.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts by South African authorities to combat the pervasive issue of illegal mining, which poses significant risks to economic stability and public safety. The public is urged to report any suspected illegal mining activities to the SAPS Crime Stop hotline.
