EHOMBA – Outjo Secondary School continued its streak of excellence by dominating the Kunene Regional Education Directorate’s annual award ceremony, held at Ehomba Combined School, about 120 km from Opuwo.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Outjo SS excelled in the 2023 academic year, clinching top honors for both the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSCO) and the National Senior Secondary Certificate Advanced Subsidiary (NSSCAS), capturing 90 percent of the awards presented. This marks the third consecutive year the school has achieved this distinction. The institution received a total of 37 individual and collective prizes, setting a record for the most awards ever received by a single school in the region.
Students July Schmidt and Upi Kapi each scored 35 points, sharing the gold trophy for outstanding overall performance in the NSSCO category. Desteria Guriras and Macdonald Oaseb both received the best overall award in the AS category, with each student awarded N.dollars 2,500 by Outjo’s OK Grocer for their achievements.
Outjo SS’s teachers also received recognition for their contributions to the school’s success. Genevive Nghiyolwa, who won gold in Physical Science, and Mbomboro Ndinelago, recognized for Home Economics, were awarded laptops for maintaining perfect records in their subjects. Additionally, the school secured a bronze medal in the AS-level best-performing school category.
The ceremony also highlighted achievements from other schools, with Putuavanga Secondary School and Mureti High School receiving gold and silver, respectively, and Kamanjab Combined School winning gold in the NSSCO category.
Sophia Fredrieck, the region’s education director, attended the ceremony and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to enhance the region’s educational outcomes. Despite acknowledging the region’s poor performance in national rankings last year, Fredrieck expressed confidence in the anticipated improvements this year, inspired by the achievements of the award recipients.
