Police members arrerst suspects for possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition

Police members arrested suspects in possession of firearms and ammunition for which they had no valid licence to possess.

On Friday, 20 August 201, police members attached to Lockdown II were busy conducting a Vehicle Checkpoint in Market road, Philippi East. When the members searched the driver of a white Toyota Etios, they discovered a firearm tucked into his waist. The 35-year-old man was arrested and detained.

In an unrelated incident, Samora Machel police officers were busy with routine patrols in Heinz Park on Saturday, 21 August 2021, when they received information relating to two armed males, walking down the road. As the police members proceeded, they noticed the two males fitting the description and searched them. A 22-year-old man was arrested and detained when he was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol with ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on separate charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
