NNA – The UNIFIL said in a statement issued on Thursday that its commander, Major General Luciano Portolano visited Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Tammam Salam in Beirut and discussed with both of them the situation in the UNIFIL’s area of operations, with a particular focus on the recent report released by the UN Secretary-General on the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, under the mandate of the UNIFIL, in addition to issues related to the recent trilateral meeting.

Portolano was “very encouraged by his meetings with Salam and Berri,” and considered them a reaffirmation of Lebanon’s continuous support to the UNIFIL’s mission, as well as to the efforts on the ground, in coordination with the Lebanese Army, to preserve stability in the South.

“We had very productive meetings and we exchanged views in terms of taking major steps regarding a number of crucial issues, for the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701,” Portolano said.

“I assured the Speaker Berri and Prime Minister Salam that the situation in the UNIFIL area of operations is stable now, and we continue to strengthen our presence on the ground and at sea by running patrols throughout the area of operations within the Lebanese territory, amid close coordination with the Lebanese armed forces,” the Major General concluded.
