Presidency Announces Progress on South Africa’s Energy Action Plan

PRETORIA — The Presidency has provided an 18-month progress update on the implementation of South Africa’s Energy Action Plan (EAP), introduced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2022. Under the coordination of the National Energy Crisis Committee led by Electricity Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the plan aims to address the country’s energy challenges, including ending load shedding.



According to South African Government News Agency,Significant advancements have been reported, such as the early return of units at the Kusile Power Station, a doubling in installed rooftop solar capacity, and the release of Independent Power Producer bid windows for new generation capacity. Additionally, cross-border power procurement and the connection of the first Battery Energy Storage System project to the grid mark critical steps towards enhancing electricity supply stability.



The Presidency’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, emphasized the government’s commitment to full implementation of the EAP, with the report accessible for public review. Concurrently, Eskom has announced a temporary suspension of load shedding, attributing it to improved generation capacity and lower demand expectations for the upcoming weekend.
