Presidents of South Africa and Botswana to Visit Site of Deadly Bus Crash in Limpopo

LIMPOPO – In a significant gesture of solidarity and mourning, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana are scheduled to visit the site of a catastrophic bus accident in Limpopo on Thursday. The accident, which occurred on 28 March 2024, resulted in the loss of 45 lives as a bus veered off a bridge along the Mmamatlakala Pass. The bus was en route from Molepolole in Botswana to Moria in Limpopo, carrying passengers to Easter celebrations.



According to South African Government News Agency, the two heads of state will begin their visit with a closed briefing by officials in Mokopane, before proceeding to the crash site along the R518 road. The visit aims to provide the leaders with firsthand information on the tragedy that befell the Botswana Easter pilgrims, among whom an eight-year-old child was the sole survivor.



President Ramaphosa has already extended his condolences to the government of Botswana and the families of the victims, recognizing the profound impact of the accident on both nations. The briefing in Mokopane is set for 10:30 am, with the site visit to the Mmamatlakale Bridge planned for the afternoon, marking a somber occasion for reflection and remembrance of the lives lost in this tragic incident.
