Rapist locked for life behind prison walls

NORTHERN CAPE – The Northern Cape Police Management welcomed a life jail term handed down to a rapist, Karneels Moteme by the Kathu Regional Court on Friday, 24 January 2020.

Karneels Moteme (25), will spend the rest of his life behind prison walls for raping his 25-year-old cousin. Karneels raped his cousin in August 2018. On the day of the rape incident the victim was walking from a party in the neighbourhood near Kathu and he accosted her, hit her with a bottle on the head and dragged her to a nearby yard and raped her. The victim was hospitalised and treated for the injuries inflicted by the accused.

The John Taolo Gaetsewe Cluster Commander, Major General Johan Bean applauded the Investigating Officer, Constable PK Bele for an excellent investigation. He also thanked the National Prosecuting Authority and the Department of Justice for restoring the community’s faith in them and confidence in our justice system by removing rapists and perpetrators from the society.

“This life sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals, they will learn that they have no place in our society” said Major General Bean.
