Rapist senteced to 34 years’ imprisonment

BLOEMFONTEIN – An elderly woman and her granddaughter were attacked and raped by an unknown man. DNA tests were conducted which led to the arrest of this rapist. The investigator was applauded for a sterling investigation.

On 07 January 2018, a 61-year-old grandmother and her 10-year-old granddaughter were asleep when an unknown male broke into their home.

The suspect overpowered them and raped them both. After the rape ordeal, he left the scene. A case of house breaking and two counts of rape was registered for further investigation. The case was assigned to Lejweleputswa District Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

Detective Warrant Officer Fannie van der Merwe conducted a DNA test during the investigation which led to the arrest of a 48-year-old suspect on 11 April 2019. He was found guilty as charged by Welkom Regional Court. The accused was sentenced as follows:

• Count 1: burglary 4 years imprisonment;

• Count 2: Rape 20 years imprisonment and

• Count 3: Rape 10 years imprisonment.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Free State, Major Gen Solly Lesia applauded the investigator, Detective Warrant Officer Van Der Merwe for conducting a thorough investigation which led to the harsh sentencing.
