Riebeek West Police Sergeant Charged with Assault, Faces Court Appearance

General

RIEBEEK WEST — A 38-year-old police sergeant from Riebeek West is set to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and domestic violence. The charges stem from an incident on Friday evening where the sergeant allegedly assaulted relatives at a residence on Deon Adams Avenue.

According to South African Police Service, internal disciplinary actions have been initiated against the sergeant following his arrest. This case has prompted comments from Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt General Thembisile Patekile, who emphasized the police’s duty to set a strong example in combating gender-based violence. “It is disconcerting that the protectors of society are on the wrong side of the law at a time when our efforts to curb gender-based violence and femicide should be heightened,” Lt General Patekile stated.

The SAPS management in the Western Cape has reiterated its commitment to addressing all forms of gender-based violence, underscoring the seriousness with which it views offenses committed by its own members against women, children, and vulnerable groups.
