Rundu: The population of Rundu Urban Constituency surpasses the combined population of the remaining constituencies in the Kavango East Region, putting significant pressure on essential services such as electricity and water, according to Works and Transport Minister John Mutorwa. The statement was made during the launch of the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor’s (NORED) Turnaround Strategy Plan in Rundu.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister Mutorwa highlighted the dual nature of the population increase, describing it as both beneficial and challenging. While the growth underscores Rundu’s status as the region’s main town, it also strains public services, necessitating accelerated rural development. He emphasized the need for government focus on other potential growth areas within the region.
Mutorwa also cited Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo, noting that the electricity sector must balance costs to ensure affordability for ordinary Namibians. Although there are significant efforts
towards universal electricity access, the affordability of energy remains a challenge for many households already connected to the grid.
He advised NORED’s leadership that the turnaround strategy is merely a plan until it is effectively implemented to address real-life challenges faced by citizens. NORED’s Business Strategy officer, Christopher Aimwata, explained that the turnaround strategy was developed to address issues such as declining profits and liquidity challenges. Last June, NamPower’s electricity supply cut to NORED left all regions it serves in darkness, underscoring the urgency of the plan.
