Seven Arrested Following Jewellery Shop Heist in Clearwater Mall

ROODEPOORT: A swift response by law enforcement officers and private security personnel led to the arrest of seven suspects following a robbery at a jewellery shop in Clearwater Mall. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved the recovery of four firearms and left two police officers and three suspects injured during a subsequent shootout.

According to South African Police Service, the robbery involved approximately eight armed suspects who entered the shop and held employees at gunpoint, seizing a significant amount of jewellery. As the suspects attempted to flee the scene, they were intercepted by police and security officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Four suspects were apprehended near Christiaan Dewet Road, opposite the mall, and two firearms were seized at that location.

The police continued their pursuit to Dobsonville, resulting in the arrest of three additional suspects and the recovery of two more firearms. Some of the stolen jewellery has since been retrieved.

Gauteng Provincial
Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, credited the successful arrests to the collaboration among the South African Police Service, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, and private security companies. He expressed gratitude to the involved agencies, stating, “These arrests should send a message to all the criminals that law enforcement agencies are ready for them this festive season.”

The suspects are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, facing charges that include business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms.
