Several suspects arrested and firearms confiscated in various areas of the Western Cape

Western Cape: On Wednesday, 2017-02-15 at about 01:10 Mitchell’s Plain police were attending to complaints and doing patrols in the precinct, when they observed a group of men standing in front of a residence in Zebra crescent, Eastridge, Mitchell’s Plain. Police members approached them, and they started running. SAPS members managed to apprehend two of the men, and upon searching the surroundings they found a black 9mm Norinco pistol with 1x magazine containing 7x rounds.

The two suspects, with the ages of 22 and 23 years, were arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. Both suspects are due to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2017-02-20 on these charges.

On the same day at about 19:45 the Philippi SAPS Crime Prevention Unit searched a 32 year old man at Donegal Court Hanover Park and confiscated a 9mm CZ pistol with a magazine and live ammunition. The serial number had been filed off. The suspect is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2017-02-20 on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

This morning (Thursday 2017-02-16) the Stabilisation Unit responded to information from Crime Intelligence and conducted a search operation in Somerset West. At approximately 06:10 they entered and searched a residence in Park Road where they recovered a 9mm Norinco Star pistol, two magazines and 13 x 9mm rounds. A bullet proof vest and 86 Ecstasy tablets, value estimated at R6000, were also seized. Six men, aged between 21 and 32, were arrested and are due to appear in Somerset West Magistrate’s Court, once charged.
