Sierra Leone will actively participate in the “Pact for the Future” Summit, a pivotal event during this year’s United Nations General Assembly to revitalise multilateralism and address global challenges. The summit will bring together world leaders to endorse a transformative pact for the future.
Dr Victoria M. Sulimani, Director General and Ambassador-At-Large of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the significance of the summit during the “Future of Peace and National Cohesion Townhall Meeting” organised by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education in Freetown. She emphasised that the summit’s outcome will be a landmark agreement, the “Pact for the Future,” which aims to reform the United Nations and enhance its effectiveness in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The “Pact for the Future” is being negotiated by UN member states, with Germany and Namibia leading the discussions. The comprehensive zero draft incorporates ideas from the UN Secretary-General’
s “Our Common Agenda” report and member states’ submissions and focuses on five key areas: Sustainable Development Goals, Peace and Security, Science, Innovation and Technology, Youth and Future Generations, and Global Governance.
Dr. Sulimani expressed optimism that the co-facilitators of the negotiations will present a final document for President Bio’s signature. This document will outline commitments to SDG achievement and significant reforms in global governance, including the restructuring of the international financial architecture and the reform of the UN Security Council.
She also underscored Sierra Leone’s belief in the power of multilateralism, citing the country’s successful leadership during its presidency of the UN Security Council as evidence of the potential for collective action to address complex global issues.
Sierra Leone’s involvement in the summit reflects its dedication to shaping the future of global governance and contributing to the international community’s efforts to build a mor
e equitable and sustainable world.
