South Africa: Cosatu Nob’s Visits Families of Lily Mine Workers

The Congress of South African Trade Unions Deputy General Secretary has joined the delegation led by the National Union of Mineworkers at Lily mine around Barberton to continue to support the families of the three trapped mine workers.

The recent COSATU CEC resolved to rally behind the families of Solomon Nyerende, Yvonne Mnisi and Pretty Nkambule whose bodies are still to be rescued from the belly of the mine surface after the mine collapsed whilst they were on duty.

Safety at all workplace is a struggle the Federation will pursue against negligent employers. COSATU continues to support NUM’s programme to enhance safe mining at all workplaces.

COSATU supports more stringent measures against bosses who prioritize profits at the expense of workers and review of the mining Charter must address the challenge.

COSATU leadership will be part of delegation to meet workers on the 12th June 2016 to call for the rescue mission to resume again.
