SOUTH AFRICA: UNREASONABLE RATES, TAXES MUST BE CANCELLED SAYS OPPOSITION

he political party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says that the government must immediately cancel all ‘unreasonable rates and taxes’ for the poor.

“There is growing phenomenon across townships where the municipalities are charging our people, in particular old age-headed households, unreasonable and inexplicable rates,” said national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Pensioners in townships were receiving bills as high as R6,000 a month and sometimes had their electricity switched off, he said.

“It makes no sense whatsoever that the poor who are on pension and child grants get charged services of so exorbitant amounts within the rising levels of unemployment.”

The EFF called on the debts to be cancelled as they believed they were unreasonable and represented “corruption”.

The party said it was planning action against these municipalities soon.
