SOUTH AFRICA’S OLYMPIC COMMITTEE GETS FINANCIAL INJECTION

PRETORIA, April 10 The Sports Ministry has pledged more money to help elite South African athletes to adequately prepare for this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The financial injection will come as a big relief for the cash strapped South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Minister Fikile Mbalula says the money will increase South Africa’s chances of meeting their targets.

“Sport and Recreation South Africa, in the 2016/2017 financial year, has committed additional funding to Sascoc over and above the Sascoc fiscal transfer as part of the focus support to all the medal contenders. Specific needs for coaches of medal contenders will be identified as well as the specific needs for coaches of medal contenders will be identified as the focus in the preparation is narrowed.”

Mbalula says government will also provide an extra 300 million rand to renovate sport stadiums and build new ones.

“For the initial financial year, which is this year, government has allocated R300 million towards the building of facilities and renovation of facilities. We have already identified over 30 sites for starters, where the roll out will be made in this financial year.” –
