Madlanga Commission Announces Scheduled Break in Proceedings

Pretoria: The Madlanga Commission has declared a scheduled break from its ongoing proceedings, with hearings set to resume on 13 October 2025. This pause comes as a result of the unavailability of Commissioner Sesi Baloyi, who will be attending to her responsibilities with the Judicial Service Commission during the break from 6 to 10 October.

According to South African Government News Agency, the hearings were unexpectedly halted earlier this week due to the illness of a key witness. The Commission’s spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, stated that the public hearings were originally scheduled to continue until Friday, 3 October 2025. However, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga had to adjourn the session when Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, the Divisional Commissioner for Crime Intelligence, was unable to continue his testimony due to a sudden illness.

The Commission, formally known as the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, has already heard testimonies from several key figures. These include KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and South African Police Service National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola. Other notable testimonies have been provided by Elaine Harrison, Director of Public Prosecutions at the National Prosecuting Authority in KZN, and Major General Petronella van Rooyen, Head of Governance, Legislation and Policy at the SAPS Legal Services Division.
