Belmont: The South African Police Service (SAPS) remains steadfast in its commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). Provincial Management welcomed the sentencing of a 33-year-old man to 15 years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of his 26-year-old wife. The incident occurred on 23 November 2023 at approximately 11:00. Following a domestic dispute the previous evening at their residence in Hopetown, the accused pursued his wife to a farm near Belmont. There, in the presence of her mother and sister, he brutally stabbed her multiple times before fleeing the scene.
According to South African Police Service, due to the swift response and diligent investigation by law enforcement, the perpetrator was arrested and recently sentenced in the Kimberley Regional Court. He received 15 years for attempted murder and an additional 6 months for trespassing on private property. The sentences will run concurrently. Furthermore, he has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, commended Detective Sergeant Kagisho Carlse of the Belmont Detectives for his investigative work. She emphasized the importance of speaking out against domestic violence and expressed gratitude to the National Prosecuting Authority for their continued collaboration in the fight against GBVF. The Provincial Commissioner noted that this sentence should serve as a stern warning and deterrent to would-be offenders.
