Shanghai: The first shipment of South African avocados has successfully reached the shores of China, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural exports. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has applauded the South African avocado industry’s efforts in targeting international markets, which he believes will drive economic growth and create jobs.
According to South African Government News Agency, last week witnessed the arrival of the season’s initial batch of avocados in Shanghai. This event is described by Steenhuisen as an “early bird shipment” and a testament to the dedication and strategic planning within the South African avocado sector. The expansion into new markets is seen as a catalyst for increased demand for South African products, supporting the economy and job creation in the agricultural sector.
The Minister highlighted South Africa’s standing as a significant player in the global avocado industry, which is bolstered by investments from the private sector. Companies such as ZZ2, a prominent farming conglomerate, have invested in advanced packhouses and nurseries. Additionally, Core Fruit’s export expertise and Mission Produce’s international presence further support the country’s market positioning.
Steenhuisen also emphasized South Africa’s logistical advantage over competitors like Peru, noting shorter shipping times to China. This advantage, combined with ZZ2’s early production schedule, enables South African avocados to reach the Chinese market during periods of lower supply.
In August 2023, South Africa and China finalized a phytosanitary agreement, resulting in the first shipment of 21 tons of South African avocados from Westfalia Fruits arriving in Shanghai on 8 October 2024. This shipment positions South Africa as the third African nation to access the Chinese market, following Kenya and Tanzania. Expanding market access for South African agriculture remains a priority for Minister Steenhuisen.
