Washington: President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Washington DC for a high-level Working Visit aimed at resetting and revitalising bilateral relations between South Africa and the United States.

According to South African Government News Agency, the visit is set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing global landscape and comes at a time when both countries are exploring opportunities to redefine their engagement. President Ramaphosa is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House, in what is seen as a pivotal moment for strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, and global diplomacy.

Speaking to media upon arrival, Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya emphasised the importance of the visit, describing it as a significant step in reframing bilateral, economic, and trade relations. Magwenya noted that the President is prepared and enthusiastic about the meeting, aiming to reset the relationship between South Africa and the United States.

Magwenya highlighted that the primary goal is to engage openly and constructively on a range of issues, with a strong focus on trade relations. He addressed the global perception of South Africa regarding racial issues, asserting the country’s stance and clarifying that the focus will be on opportunities to reset the relationship.

The future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a US trade preference programme, is expected to feature prominently in the discussions. Magwenya expressed South Africa’s hope for AGOA’s extension but also readiness to propose a new trade relationship framework if necessary.

The spokesperson also commented on broader multilateral dynamics, including South Africa’s G20 Presidency, and addressed questions about US participation in recent meetings. He mentioned that the invitation to President Trump for the G20 Summit remains open, leaving room for potential developments.

Magwenya was asked about President Ramaphosa’s apprehensions regarding potential contentious discussions with President Trump. He dismissed such concerns, suggesting that robust discussions are natural in diplomatic engagements.

Questions about the so-called persecution of white South African farmers and the refugee narrative were also addressed. Magwenya indicated that while these issues are acknowledged, the primary focus remains on resetting and enhancing the trade relationship.

When asked about a potential meeting with South African-born entrepreneur Elon Musk, Magwenya stated that they will be briefed by their team in the US, and decisions will be made accordingly.

President Ramaphosa is accompanied by a high-level delegation of Ministers, including Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola; Minister in The Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni; Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau; Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, and the Special Envoy to the United States of America, Mcebisi Jonas.
