KOMMAGAS -- A recent operation by the Operation Vala Umgodi team, focusing on curbing illegal mining activities in Kommagas, led to the recovery of a vehicle reported stolen and the arrest of several suspects. The operation, conducted on Saturday, March 30, 2024, demonstrated the team's commitment to tackling illegal activities in the region.
According to South African Police Service, the silver Toyota Corolla was recovered after being reported stolen in Milnerton, Cape Town, in December 2023. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the possession of the suspected stolen vehicle.
The operation, described as disruptive and intelligence-driven, also led the team to a residence in Buffelsrivier, where illegal substances such as dagga, Tik, and alcoholic beverages were seized. An illegal establishment operating at the location was shut down, resulting in the arrest of a 30-year-old individual for drug possession.
Furthermore, the operation saw the arrest of two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 30 and 40, for violations of the Immigration Act and attempting to bribe a police official. These arrests underscore the multifaceted nature of crimes associated with illegal mining areas.
In addition to these activities, the team conducted numerous vehicle checkpoints (VCPs) around known hotspots for illegal mining. Tools suspected of being used for illegal mining were confiscated, highlighting the operation's effectiveness in disrupting the operations of those involved in such illicit activities.
Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, the Acting Provincial Commissioner, has commended the members of Operation Vala Umgodi for their diligent efforts in addressing not only illegal mining but also the array of related crimes in the Namakwa District. This operation is part of an ongoing strategy to ensure safety and uphold the law in regions affected by illegal mining and its consequent criminal activities.
