Suspects arrested with illegal firearms

EASTERN CAPE – Police in Gqeberha arrested three suspects and confiscated two firearms with ammunition in separate incidents on Saturday, 5 November 2022.
In the first incident, at about 15:00, SAPS Mount Road Crime Prevention members were patrolling in the Sydenham area when they noticed a familiar male standing next to a blue KIA at the corners of Smart and Milner Streets. The driver of the KIA started to drive behind the police vehicle and when they realised that the police members were watching them from their vehicle, they turned off towards the North End Lake.
The CPU members then followed them and stopped their vehicle. All three occupants were searched. The driver, aged 30 years old was found in possession of a 357 magnum round while the passenger (30) was found with a revolver and 6 rounds of ammunition tucked inside his pants. The third occupant was found with nothing. The members further confiscated 4 live ammunition rounds found in as sock on the vehicle’s floor.
Both suspects were detained – one on a charge of illegal possession of ammunition and the other for possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Their vehicle was also confiscated.
In the second incident, at about 15:40, Anti-Gang Unit members were on patrol in Barberry Road in Ext 32, when they spotted two males moving in between the shacks. They were followed and stopped. On searching them, one male aged 29 years old was found in possession of a 9mm pistol (serial number filed off). The male was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
The arrested suspects will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court on Monday, 7 November 2022 on their respective charges.
