Three suspects arrested and three firearms seized following two robberies

WELKOM – On 14 May 2022 at about 13:00, Welkom Police were informed about a bakery truck and a tuck shop were robbed at Reahola Complex.

Information was received about the five suspects traveling in a silver Toyota Etios with GP number plates. Members of Welkom Flying Squad responded to the complaint and the sedan was spotted in Milner Road, Welkom. Members in a marked police vehicle signalled to the driver to stop and come out of the vehicle.

The suspects pointed firearms at police and sped away. Members fired in response and one suspect was wounded on his upper body.

Three armed suspects, aged 34 to 40 years, were arrested by Welkom Flying Squad and one suspect under police guard was rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Three firearms, ammunition, handcuffs, knife, pepper spray, gloves and a safe robbed from a bakery delivery truck were all seized. The Toyota Etios, suspected to have been stolen, were also seized.

The suspects are facing charges of business robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and possession of suspected stolen vehicle.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate Court on 16 May 2022.
