Two suspects injured during a shootout with law enforcement members

GAUTENG – On the early hours of 23 September 2022, the police conducted an intelligence driven operation on illegal miners in Boksburg.
The team comprising of Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Trio Task Team, Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic, EMPD, Emergency Medical Service and private security companies followed up on information about alleged illegal miners who are armed with unlicensed firearms. Upon approaching the said place in Main Reef road in Boksburg, the alleged miners started firing shots at the police, causing the members to retaliate.
Five suspects were arrested including two who were wounded during the shootout. The police further seized ammunition of R5 and hunting rifles and one shotgun which is positively linked to a house robbery case in Klerksdorp.
The suspects are expected to appear before court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms. Police investigation continues.
