Upington border police confiscate illegally filled gas cylinders

The South African Police Service in the ZF Mgcawu District made a discovery of illegal gas on Sunday, 29 September 2024 after information was operationalized about a suspect who allegedly went to collect illegaly filled gas bottles to sell in the ZF Mgcawu area.

According to information, it is alleged that the gas cylinders were filled at an unregistered refilling station. The gas is a substandard gas and thus in contravention with the law.

Furthermore, it was discovered that they used registered trademark cylinders to refill and reseal illegal.

The truck with a trailer was stopped outside Upington, and 289 of these filled gas bottles of various sizes and brands were discovered. The brandholders were contacted for confirmation of refilling, and they had no knowledge of it.

The cylinders valued at R 273 260.00 and the truck with trailer were seized.

A 49-year-old suspect was detained for the contravention of the Consumer Protection Act as well as the contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
